Our Story

Born at the Bend of the Grand River

Lansing-founded, Michigan-inspired, printed to order — and built for the long haul.

Capital Loop Gifts was born at the heart of Lansing — where the dome rises above the capital city and the Grand River bends through downtown. The name comes from the trail we grew up on: the Capital Loop, a shared-use path that wraps the river, the Capitol complex, and most of the neighborhoods we still call home.

We started the company the way a lot of Michigan side projects start: one tee, one weekend, and a belief that the gift-shop shelf could be better than what we were finding. Too many Michigan shirts leaned on the same five clipart mittens. Too many tourists were shipping home polyester souvenirs that fell apart by October.

So we drew our own designs — the Michigan Bear, the UP North Oak, the Mitten — and printed them one at a time on a unisex cotton tee we’d actually wear ourselves. That was the whole model, and it still is.

Why print on demand?

Because nobody needs a warehouse full of XL shirts that might never sell. Print-on-demand means we draw, you order, and your shirt is printed the same week. Less deadstock, less waste, and a product that’s genuinely made for you.

It also means we can release new designs without betting the business on whether they’ll sell. Every Michigan region — Detroit, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, the UP — gets a chance to have its own dedicated collection over time.

What we stand for

  • Designed in-house. Every graphic is drawn in our Lansing studio. No stock art.
  • Made in the USA. All printing happens at US-based facilities, most within a day’s drive of the mitten.
  • Sustainable by default. On-demand production means we don’t print anything that won’t get worn, carried, or hung up.
  • For Michiganders, by Michiganders. The whole team still lives in Lansing. We test every product on real Michigan weekends — lake days, deer camps, football Saturdays, snow mornings.

What’s next

Our original collection was five tees. We’ve since expanded into hats, canvas bags, drinkware, and stickers — and we’re building toward dedicated collections for Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, the Upper Peninsula, and the Great Lakes themselves. Reach out if you have a corner of Michigan you want to see represented.
